Awesome Vise

Searching for a great vise? THEN SEARCH NO MORE!!! This is by far the best vise i have ever used, period... Da wood cutter and "bernie madoff" have never obviously never really needed a vise for anything heavy duty. This thing is an Industrial/Heavy Duty bench vise and will hold your truck in the air if your bench is heavy enough! Got this for my farm shop and you just cant beat it... I never fill out reviews but noticed this had an average rating and wondered why? So i thought it deserved much better. This is not your average homeowner's or weekend/honeydooer's project guy kinda vise - so don't spend that kind of money! However, if you need to clamp and hold a 6" I-beam about 15 ft long in the air and stand on the end to weld it and your bench is mounted to the floor or weighs 2 ton then this is one of the only vises you can trust!!!!

Best (Large) Bench Vise I've Used

I have been using this vise for years and it has proven invaluable over the years. The action of the vise is suprisingly smooth and throughout the many beatings this beast has taken, it shows no visible signs of wear. I have a smaller vise that doesn't compare, at all, to this monster. Don't even bother with getting the kind of vise that has the C-style tabletop clamping device, which are only good for small things that require no forceful manipulating.All of that aside, I did manage to apparently bend some of the threads on the spindle. However, this is undoubtedly because I used a "cheater"/extension bar to significantly increase the clamping force. I believe that it would be impossible to bend the threads on the spindle without such methods. Although the threads are bent, the only side-effect is that the smooth action I mentioned above isn't quite so smooth in that one spot, which isn't a problem.Be careful, though, as the T-bar that runs through the end of the spindle has pinched me a number of times, all of which were entirely my fault. The T-bar is heavier than you'd think: just let go of it in the vertical position and let the ball-stop on the end smash some skin against the spindle and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about, haha.All in all, there is no replacement for a heavy-duty vise like this one.

Buy the Wilton 63302 instead

I purchased the Wilton 676 and as soon as I removed it from the box, I put it back in the box for return. I was not going to drill holes in my workbench for this low-quality unit. I was very disappointed with the quality of construction given the Wilton reputation. The 676 is extremely "sloppy" (the front or mobile jaw had a great amount of lateral play). It has only ONE lockdown which I didn't realize until I received it (my dumb mistake). It leans greatly toward the lockdown (on the right side of the base) when the lockdown is loose. It almost appears as though you could give it a lateral push and separate it from its base. Maybe it's supposed to do this??? I own the Wilton 63302 as well, and it is a much better vise by ten-fold. The 63302 has tighter construction, better finish, double lockdowns, thicker bolt receptacles on the base, better pipe clamp teeth, etc. I am going to order my 2nd 63302 right now.

Received my vice today, and is is better that a lot of them, but I was expecting it to be Made in USA, which is why I chose this brand. If I wanted Chinese stuff Sears, Lowes, and harbor Freight are all a lot cheaper.r.

Nice base for the Wilton 1755 Tradesman Vise

I picked this item up from Amazon for my Wilton 1755 Tradesman Vise.(Excellent Vise that should last generations) I didn't want to use the corner of my worktable in my shop so I was pretty glad when I stumbled upon this base. The vise fits perfectly on the base and is a great working height at the level of the pelvis. I secured the Pedestal Base to my concrete floor with 4 (Red Head) concrete wedge anchors that I picked up at Lowes..It is a great setup and moveable if needed.It would have earned 5 stars but the price is a bit prohibitive.There is a very slight bit of flex when really puting some weight into your work.For the convenience of having a vise that is moveable and not on your worktable/bench, this is a very nice addition to any shop..Workmanship/quality of the Pedestal Base is excellent.Finish on one of the edges (at the top where the vise mounts) had come off as a result of being dropped during shipping I assume. The color matches the Wilton Tradesman vise perfectly.

Take a Stand

This is a great addition to the Tradesman vise I had purchased with this order. Most vises are mounted to a table, bench, truck bumper, etc,etc. I chose this pedestal (stand) and did not bolt it down, thus, this allows me to move the Vise/pedestal combo to the work, where ever that my be: driveway,sidewalk,out in the yard. I don't worry about walls or ceilings limiting what I can mount in the vise any more.

Real, Actual Vise.

Shocked at the price? Don't be. This vise is the type used in real machine shops, and the ones that are mounted to the backs of power company trucks. These vises are the ones that you can put a 48" cheater bar on and clamp something into powder or until the bar bends. The cheepie vices you see for fifty dollars look good, but they simply break, as soon as you put any pressure on the bar, into two, large, crumbling pieces.

After 35 + years of ownership good as new.

I just came across this advert for the 5" Wilton "Bullet" vise and I thought I just might help someone decide to spend a lot of money to buy one. I purchased my vise new in 1972 and paid right around $300.00 for it. (I recall some people telling me I was nuts for spending that much money on a vise.) Okay, $300.00 in the early 70's was a lot of money but, I have used that vise almost on a daily basis for well over 35 years and, it has never failed me in anyway. I've not babied the vise either, if a job requires a heavy vise to be completed that's right were it goes. Other than normal wear to the jaws (it still has the original serrated jaws,)and a few marks where I've hit it with a hacksaw, it as good as the day I bought it. I've cleaned and lubed the slide and screw and, painted it a few times, but other than that I've never put a penny's worth of repair into it. I don't know if the new Wilton's are made in America anymore, but if they are I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy another one even at the current $900.00 price tag. Happy Shopping !

Best Vise Ever

I am a welder, and can kill a vise in 5mins with a plastic fork. Not this one, it is mounted to the back of my welding rig and can take any abuse I throw at it, sure it is expensive, but figure after 25 years it cost you 50 bucks a year.
