Warm and smooth

Before buying this PU i read a lot of reviews. Some said it was a hot metal pickup other said it was bright. I find this not to be the case. As a mater of fact, I purchased this because of the way it sounded on the Seymour Duncan web site. I was looking for a smooth sounding PU with a little heat, and I think that's about what it is. I put it into a mahagony guitar with a maple top (Carvin DC127) with an SH2 in the neck, and I have coil split switches on both PU's. I also have another DC 127 - alder wood - with TB6 and SH6n.I use the guitar with the TB4 for stuff that is more mellow, R&B, light to moderate rock, and the TB6 for the heavy stuff. The TB4 is kind of high output, but not close to the SH6. The TB4 has a good sound, not harsh, especially not bright sounding. Those who say it is good for metal must have there drive turned way up, in that case, yes, it would be good for metal, but I find this pickup to sound good through a nice clean setting (I have a Carvin V3 combo and Digitech GSP1101).I had to make a few extra settings on my setup to boost the output of this guitar when using both the TB4 and SH2n in combination because the band drowns me out, not so with the TB6 (even in single coil mode). But that said, it is a nice PU, better than the ones that came on the Carvin. And there is a wide range of sounds I can get with the different combinations of settings using the coil split switches.

Hot-rodded, yet smooth and versatile

The TB-4 Trembucker is the same pickup as the SH-4 JB, only the former is spaced for Fender-style guitars (or many guitars with tremolo systems), which have slightly wider spacing at the bridge than a fixed bridge, such as a Les Paul. The difference subtle, and either pickup would probably sound just fine even if the strings didn't line up perfectly with the pole pieces. But check your spacing at the bridge pickup - if it is more than 50mm E to E (many Fenders are around 52 or 53mm), the Trembucker version will be the better fit.As for how it sounds, I have absolutely no complaints. I'm mostly a home player and a hobbyist, but I do have a number of different guitars and have really gotten involved with modding and trying out different pickups. I bought the TB-4 because I really wanted to own a "real" Seymour Duncan to see what all the fuss is about. In general, I think the obsession over premium pickups is a bit "overwound" (see what I did there?). At the end of the day, you're talking about a magnet coil with a bunch of wire wrapped around it. There are a million variables including the composition of the guitar, amplifier, and electronics that go into the resulting tone, and whether or not you happen to like that.All that being said, I have no complaint with the TB-4, it's a very nice pickup! It has pretty high output (16.4k), which translates to a robust low end and well-defined highs. One unique thing about the SH-4/TB-4, however, is that many players prefer it with 250k tone pots (as opposed to 500k), which are warmer than those used with most humbuckers. Without these, the high-end can be a bit piercing. In a "Fat Strat" with a bridge humbucker and 250k pots, the TB-4 sounds terrific. The other reviewers who described it as "smooth" were dead-on. The magnet is an Alnico V, which can be bright and punchy, but I think the degree of winding just thickens up the tone all over the spectrum.I'm not sure I would necessarily recommend the SH-4/TB-4 in a Les Paul style guitar, given the other options. Also, there are a lot of cheaper options out there from companies such as GuitarFetish and Tonerider that do an excellent job. But if the premium price isn't too prohibitive, you won't regret purchasing a Duncan - they're extremely well-made, reliable, and sound great.

Good replacement for stock pickups

I installed it in an Ibanez RG guitar, replacing the stock bridge pickup. I'm running it through a 30W Line 6 Amp, and it really shines at higher volumes, with a moderate to high amount of overdrive. Palm-muted E-string riffs sound quite a bit "chunkier", with better definition than the stock PU. At least with my setup, I haven't noticed a huge difference when playing leads, but they still sound mighty fine.
