I've been using this version of the MindSpa since 2006 and love it. I use it to focus my attention before big work projects (financial reports and business writing), to de-stress, and to help me fall asleep. Works great for me for all of the above. I don't know how the newer MindSpa models differ, so my comments only apply to this one (model #MDS-12 I think). A few tips from my personal experience:* Start with the "beginner" alpha relaxation programs to get used to AVS therapy* Give it 3-4 weeks 1-2x/day to get the maximum benefit.* Replace the earbuds with some nice closed-air headphones with good bass response--the deep low-frequencies are especially relaxing* Seems to work fine while listening to an audiobook or the radio (using the included mini-cable to plug into your iphone or ipod)* Try using the WHITE light glasses for relaxation and sleep and the "calm blue" BLUE light glasses for the ADD/ADHD and focus programs. This is the opposite of what they recommend but works better this way for me.--Here's the email product review that got me interested in the MindSpa. MindSpa has 12 programs that range in length from 10 to 40 minutes and use alpha, beta, and theta frequencies intended to help you focus your mind, relax, learn, problem solve, increase creative thinking, enter expanded mind states, and more.How Does It Work?MindSpa uses the principle of frequency following response (FFR), the mind's natural tendency to entrain to rhythmic photo or audio stimulation. Olmstead has shown that AVS improves attention, memory, mood, and cognitive performance in children with learning disabilities including ADHD and ADD. These MindSpa protocols (programs 9 through 12) work by "stretching" your mind from very low (theta) to very high (upper beta) brainwave states several times per week. In this respect, it's like working out any other muscle in the body--you might not see instant results (a minimum 4 to 6-week commitment is advised), but the eventual benefits are sustained. On the other hand, the relaxation protocols included in MindSpa (programs 2 through 4) as well as the Alpha Recharge (program 1) offer much more immediate effects.What's the Research Behind MindSpa?In addition to Dr. Olmstead's extensive research since 1991, there are two MindSpa studies currently under way in China to determine its effectiveness in improving English, Chinese, and mathematics performance by middle-school students. In addition, studies are being conducted at Moscow University to determine if MindSpa can help with quitting smoking and other addictions. Finally, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) co-creator Richard Bandler uses the MindSpa personally and with clients to facilitate trance induction and relaxation, and to shift mind states.Is MindSpa Effective?Tami and I both found that the Alpha Recharge (program 1) provides a definite rejuvenating effect when used in the mid-afternoon in place of a cup of tea or coffee. It only takes 10 minutes, and there are no "caffeine jitters" to deal with. I also tried the Alpha Recharge during a mindfulness meditation practice taught by Thich Nhat Hanh, and was surprised by the results. Usually when I meditate it takes me several minutes to get physically settled or "find my seat," but with the MindSpa, I was able to sit on my zafu without fidgeting--the physical calming effect I experienced was significant.Andrew tested the MindSpa for 6 weeks. He found the Advanced Focus for Adults (program 12) very good before doing vipassana "body scanning" meditation, which requires a high degree of focused, alert attention. (Interestingly, he found this program very helpful before playing tennis!) He also used the Cognitive Enhancement protocol (program 10) daily over a period of 4 weeks. He reported feeling a strong sense of mental clarity that developed gradually--and that persists throughout the day.Several testers deemed the theta protocols (programs 6 through 8) superb for entering vivid waking dream states (sitting meditation posture worked best) or for self-hypnosis. Our traffic manager Kristina tried MindSpa with Dr. Steven Gurgevich's Self-Hypnosis Home Study Course trancework sessions and found it powerfully aided her in entering trance. Andrew also found the theta protocols helpful for falling asleep, but I found these sessions increased alertness, and prefer to fall asleep with Deep Alpha Relaxation II (program 4).One more effective use for MindSpa: Kristina tried the relaxation programs on an airplane and found them incredibly helpful in easing travel stress.What Separates MindSpa from Similar Products?For one thing, the extensive and ongoing research behind MindSpa. What's more, MindSpa is more versatile than, for example, Dr. Norm Shealy's RelaxMate, a great product for relaxation, but not intended to bring the broad range of benefits we experimented with.ConclusionOur experiences with MindSpa convinced us that it is a powerful tool for accessing altered states of consciousness, for re-training our natural ability to relax, focus, and be productive, and for sustaining attention. It's surprisingly sturdy for its feather-light weight.Ease of use: AIf you've never used phototherapy and audio entrainment together, the first time with MindSpa may be "intense," but we acclimated quickly. Learning disabilities comprise cognitive deficits in executive functioning; such deficits include working memory, encoding, visual-motor coordination, response inhibition, planning, and processing. Aside from medication, educational remediation, and classroom interventions, no specific intervention has been found to rehabilitate such cognitive weaknesses, although previous studies using AVS demonstrated enhanced academic performance in children with learning disabilities.The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III) SCAD (Symbol Search, Coding, Arithmetic, and Digit Span) was administered before and after 12 biweekly, 35-minute AVS sessions. Two index scores from the SCAD profile were also assessed: Freedom from Distractability (FFD) and Processing Speed (PS). The study design was quasi-experimental with repeated measures pre- and posttreatment. Findings demonstrated that AVS produced significant changes in specific cognitive abilities as measured by the WISC-III SCAD profile. Results suggest that this technology could greatly enhance the quality of life for learning-disabled individuals who, absent appropriate intervention, are at risk for social, psychological, and a multitude of personal disappointments and life-long failures.Hope that helps!
