4Solid speaker - worth the extra $$ vs Phoenix Gold ATc6 6.5-inch In-Ceiling Speakers
By O
I bought these Yamaha speakers and a pair of Phoenix Gold ATc6 6.5-inch. I put one set in my kitchen ceiling, the other set in my dining room. Both were powered from the same amplifier, and I used thermal insulation in the back of both sets. My wife and I are not audiophiles, but we both agreed the Yamaha's had a richer, more solid sound. Easily was worth the $20 price difference. I gave 4-stars, rather than 5 because the grills were tricky to attach using glue sticks; otherwise installation was a a breeze.

5Great Buy
By Chris Heathcoe
This product is excellent! I am using 4 of them for a surround sound and they sound great. I was very happy with the entire purchase process it was very easy, and the delivery time was very fast the product was delivered in 3 days. I would recommend this product to anyone trying to build your own surround sound and not trying to spend a lot of money. These speakers sound great, if you can build boxes in the ceiling to put the speakers in it really helps the sound quality and also increases the bass that these speakers can produce.

2Speakers for the undiscerning - or perhaps surround sound
By K. Crawford
Maybe I'm being too picky for $85/pair speakers, but these things are very weak on the low end. Do yourself a favor and buy the Polk RC80i's instead. They're MUCH better. Yes, they are $140 (sometimes as low as $100 though if you're patient) vs. $85, but the sound quality difference is substantial.I have both in my house and have used both with the exact same amp and pre-amp, so my recommendation is based on personal experience and a very direct comparison.Luckily, the ceiling hole size is just about the same, so these are getting returned and I'll be buying a 2nd pair of RC801's instead.UPDATE: My overall review is not changing, but I was so confused about why others were so happy with these speakers when they were so weak in my opinion, when it occurred to me that most of the other reviewers were using them for an A/V surround sound setup. Because in that environment you get most of the lows from the subwoofer and the fronts whereas the sides/rears are used for the more directionally noticeable mids and highs, I could see how they would be better suited for a surround sound setup. Their mids and highs are very good, perhaps a tiny bit better than the RC80i's. So, if you're using them for a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound setup and you're being cost conscious, these wouldn't be a horrible choice. But they're still not as good overall as the RC80i's nor any better than a 2-star set of speakers when rated based on their overall performance.
