Product Description

These Riedel Vinum Montrachet glasses are the larger of the two Chardonnay glasses in the ever-popular Vinum collection. The more bulbous bowls are designed to enhance the flavors of Montrachet, Pouilly-Fuisse, and fine Chardonnays, particularly those with full body and rich components. Introduced in 1986, the Riedel Vinum line was the first machine-made series of glasses in history to be based exclusively on the characteristics of grape varietals. The Vinum series has had a strong and permanent impact on the wine glass culture around the globe. These glasses have proven to consumers and restauranteurs that the pleasure of consuming wines starts with the glass. Developed by 10th generation Georg Riedel on the principle that the contents commands the shape, Vinum is great for everyday use. These glasses are made with over 24% lead crystal.

4It really does make a difference
By Robin N. Fingerson
If someone had told me that changing the shape of a glass would really make a difference in the wine...I would have scoffed. Oh, sure, it does. Hah. Riiight.I'm a convert.I don't drink California Chards. Never liked them, found them too oakey, too harsh, too...ick. Years of trying them occassionally, only to have my opinions reaffirmed. I never realized that my wine glasses made it worse.A sample CA chardonnay in my standard house-wine glass (a couple-a-bucks a stem cheapos from Target) is harsh, oily, with a bitter, un-fruitlike finish. In these admittedly odd-shaped Chardonnay glasses...the same wine is smooth, slightly oaked, and with a fruity finish. The nose and finish were completely different.I seriously didn't believe it was the same wine. We tried with a couple other CA and new-world chardonnays, ranging from a 10-buck bottle of Australian chard to an expensive California bottle. Same results (with varying degrees of difference).I've been kicking myself over how much better the wines I've drunk could have been in the right glass -- and ordered bordeaux and burgundy glasses as well, and I will be picking up glasses for my favorite varietals as I can.The glasses themselves are lovely, well-balanced, with slender stems and weighty bases. The feel quite delicate, but they are dishwasher safe. Mine have been through the crystal cycle a half-dozen times without any problems.

5Use the right wine glass
By Pat
Books shouldn't be judged by their covers and wines shouldn't be judged when tasted from the wrong glass. Maximize your wine tasting experience by using the right glass. Riedel has the right glass.
