    5Great first-step into quality sound
    By James Marcano
This receiver, to be direct, will amaze the average listener. The difference between Yamaha's RX-line and the other receivers that you'll find at places like Circuit City or Best Buy is simply astounding; even Yamaha's own HTR-line does not compare.I speak from experience; I'm an electronics salesperson, and a moderate audiophile myself. my RX-V557 is currently powering two Polk Monitor 60s, one Polk CSi3, and two older JBL500s. Until I was able to pick up this Yamaha, I had a more consumer-grade Sony powering the system. The difference, in all honesty, is like day and night. The Yamaha's steady, continuous power make the entire system sing and perfom with astonishing clarity at any volume. And I do mean ANY volume... from a romantic evening with soft Mozart to a foundation-shaking showing of a Holywood blockbuster, this is the receiver you want to power your mid-line speakers.I'm currently a Film major at Penn State, and sound is very, very important to me. This receiver has truly impressed me.On top of all of that, it'll upconvert any component feed to 720p/1080i. My only gripe is the lack of HDMI hookups, and the fact that you need to climb pretty high in the Yamaha lineup to get to a receiver that does have HDMI.So, if you're running anything from Polk's monitor series, or the equivalent JBL or Infinity lines, this is a great option. Tough to find one New on Amazon, though. Try Tweeter. (Though mine is a Yamaha refurb and performs as a new one, so refurb is a great option too... Yamaha even provides a 1-year warranty.)
