Toto Carlyle is an excellent toilet

We've waited several years to replace our Kohler Wellworth toilet with this Toto. As compared to the Kohler, it simply works well. No multiple flushes, no holding the handle down that uses 5 gallons of water instead of the rated 1.6 gallons. Installation was straighforward after calling Toto to clarify a discrepancy in the instructions on the size of hole for fastening to tile or concrete. The first Toto took about an hour and half the second installation less than an hour. The Sanagloss finish doesn't eliminate the use of a toilet brush but it reduces the need to do so.One fault with the shipping from Amazon. For home delivery, the shipper, CEVA Logistics, will call to confirm that someone will receive the shipment before scheduling delivery. However, there was no provision in the ordering form on Amazon to enter a phone number. Fortunately, we called CEVA in anticipation of the delivery to schedule delivery.

Pros: very good flushing performance, Sanagloss bowl finish, skirted design, Unifit adapter mounting system.Cons: curved tank top, require non-standard spacing of water supplyWe replaced two older 3.5 gal/flush toilets in our home with Toto Carlyle 1.6 gal/plush toilets. The Carlyles work very well: they have never clogged in the 4 years since we installed them, unlike the toilets which they replaced. On rare occasions, a second flush is required to completely clear the bowl, but not very often. The Sanagloss finish works very well to keep the bowl clean (you still have to use a brush, but not nearly as often as with a regular toilet). The toilet is fairly quiet when flushing, and refills quickly. The soft close seat is a nice additional touch; it closes quietly with a flick of the wrist.Another nice feature of this toilet is the skirted design, which conceals the mounting bolts and more importantly, prevents dust from accumulating on the horizontal base and gives the toilet a more solid appearance.A minor drawback of this model is that the tank top is not quite flat; it has a slight convex curve that prevents things from sitting squarely on top. Also, as some other reviewers have noted, because of the skirted design of this toilet, the water supply connection needs to be at least 8 inches from the center of the closet flange. In one of my bathrooms, the supply pipe was only 6 inches away, so we had to modify the pipe to make the toilet fit.Like most of the higher end Toto toilets, this one, come with a "Unifit" adapter that mounts with a wax seal to the closet flange in the floor. The toilet itself then drops onto the adapter. This mounting system makes it easy to temporarily remove the toilet without disturbing the seal (if you want to paint the wall behind it, for example, or if you want to replace the toilet: I recently replaced one of my original Toto Carlyles with a new TOTO MS964214CEFG-01 Eco Soiree Elongated One Piece Toilet with Sanagloss, and moved the older Carlyle to another bathroom). The Unifit adapter made it quite simple to move the older toilet, and just drop the new toilet in its place.The Unifit also makes the whole toilet mounting more secure: The Unifit is held to the floor by 4 screws in the rear, and two regular closet bolts in the front that attach it to the closet flange in the floor, and the toilet bolts to the Unifit. A regular toilet is secured only by the two closet bolts that hold it on the flange. Yet another advantage of the Unifit adapter is that if your closet flange has a non-standard rough-in (that is, not the standard 12 inches) you can purchase a different sized Unifit to compensate. In one of my bathrooms, the rough-in was slightly less than the standard (12 inches); when the toilet was installed, the tank was in contact with the wall. Despite the assurances of my (former) contractor that this was okay, I replaced the Unifit adapter with a 10 inch model. Now the toilet is properly positioned away from the wall.One more Toto plus: the toilet was shipped with corrosion-resistant mounting hardware (brass bolts, stainless steel screws). It's a small matter, but not all manufacturers do this, despite the fact that cheap (galvanized) hardware will quickly corrode.Note that this Carlyle toilet is an older model that uses 1.6 gallons per flush. The newer model (Eco Carlyle II) uses even less water (1.3 gal/flush) and has a different flushing system ("Double Cyclone") than this one.

Yeah, it looks sophisticated but the skirted version makes it nearly impssible to change the toilet seat and you can't put a childproof lock on it. You need to buy a Toto seat which tightens from above, then you need to lay on the floor and try to squeeze your hand into a tiny opening in the back in order to attach it. Literally, you have to have a VERY small hand and you need to get it in at a awkward, almost painful angle. This is a ridiculous design!
